Special Weather Statement issued June 14 at 2:55PM HST by NWS Honolulu HI Lava fountaining from Kilauea eruption episode 49 started this morning at 9:36 AM HST. The latest radar imagery shows the highest detectable ashfall (tephra) from the lava fountaining is currently around 10,000 feet above ground level this afternoon. Winds near the surface remain variable in speed and direction this afternoon, which will allow ashfall particles to fall near the Kilauea eruption source and its surrounding area. Above the surface, winds are generally from the trade wind direction, which will cause any additional ash to fall over portions of the Kau District immediately southwest of Halemaumau Crater. Avoid excessive exposure to ash which is an eye and respiratory irritant. Those with respiratory sensitivities should take extra precaution to minimize exposure.
