Special Weather Statement issued July 12 at 7:52PM EDT by NWS Raleigh NC At 751 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 8 miles south of Sanford to near Southern Pines to 7 miles east of Ansonville. Movement was east at 10 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Fayetteville, Sanford, Laurinburg, Southern Pines, Rockingham, Clinton, Raeford, Carthage, Fort Bragg, and Pinehurst. This includes the following highways... Interstate 95 between Mile Markers 61 and 41. US 1 near Mile Marker 69. Interstate 73 between Mile Markers 26 and 39. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Very heavy rain can be expected due to the slow movement of some of these storms. Prolonged heavy rain will result in ponding of water on roadways, standing water in low lying areas, and minor flooding of creeks and streams. Drivers are urged to slow down and use extra caution to avoid hydroplaning.
